Call for Scores!!

Call for Scores

An artistic Project for Quatuor Chouette

June 2017-March 2018

The idea to promote a “Call for Scores” was born in Spring 2017 during a speech with Martina Taubenberger, a German manager for cultural project, at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Modern composers are usually not interested in writing for clarinet quartet, because they cannot find any new stimulus in this ensemble. Main question of this project was “How and what can offer a clarinet quartet nowadays as new inputs to the composers?“

Starting from this idea, the Quatuor Chouette has been really pleased to realize this project.

Between June and October 2017 many composers from Italy and Germany joined with enthusiasm the project and at the end Quatuor Chouette received about 10 new pieces for clarinet quartet. The ensembles the composers have chosen were often unusual: someone wrote works with 2 bass clarinets, others with 2 E-flat clarinets, or even with some doubling among the instruments. The setting of the ensemble also was touched: one piece was expected to be played on the 4 corners of the public, as a surround effect.

On March 17th 2018 was organized the closing event of “Call for Scores” in Milano: an interactive workshop and the final concert, where the selected pieces has been premiered.

The workshop has been a moment of big exchange amongst the composers, professional musicians, amateurs and people just interested in music, without particular musical knowledges. It has been one hour and a half reach of questions, answers and new ideas. The selected pieces for the final concert were:

  • Quartetto by Filippo Bianchi

  • Anamorfico by Sergio Lanza

  • Adamello and Ebano by Andrea Vezzoli

  • Alea & Ludus by Alessandro Boratti

  • Klarinettenquartett (1st and 3rd movement) by Frank Zabel

  • 4 Bagatelle (4th Bagatella) by Matteo Rigotti

Some composer's feedbacks....

"Grazie mille a tutte voi,
